Animal-Assisted Therapy for Women in Colorado
Therapy Dog Sessions with Piper
There's something about being in the presence of a dog that makes the hard stuff feel a little more manageable. The walls come down a little faster. Your breathing slows. Your body relaxes in a way that words alone can't always achieve. That's not just a feeling. It's science. And it's one of the reasons Wildflower Counseling Collective offers animal-assisted therapy as part of our integrative approach to women's mental health.
Meet Piper, our certified therapy dog and a beloved part of the Wildflower experience. Piper is a gentle, intuitive companion who joins sessions to provide comfort, support, and a calming presence. She has a special gift for sensing when someone needs a little extra grounding, and her presence often helps clients access emotions and breakthroughs that might otherwise stay beneath the surface.

What Is Animal-Assisted Therapy?
Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is a therapeutic approach that incorporates a trained therapy animal into the counseling process. It's not just about having a dog in the room for comfort (although that's a wonderful benefit). AAT is an intentional, goal-directed intervention where the therapy animal plays an active role in supporting your healing.
✦ Lower cortisol (the stress hormone) and blood pressure
✦ Increase oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, the brain's feel-good chemicals
✦ Reduce feelings of anxiety symptoms, loneliness, and emotional distress
✦ Help regulate the nervous system and promote a sense of security
✦ Improve trust, connection, and emotional openness in session
Who Benefits from Animal-Assisted Therapy?
Animal-assisted therapy can be helpful for almost anyone, but it's especially powerful for women experiencing:
✦ Anxiety symptoms or panic who need help calming their nervous system
✦ Trauma survivors who struggle with feeling secure and present in their bodies
✦ Teens and college students who may feel guarded or resistant to opening up in traditional talk therapy
✦ New moms dealing with overwhelm, emotional exhaustion, or postpartum challenges
✦ Women working through self-trust issues who benefit from the unconditional acceptance a therapy dog provides
✦ Anyone who simply feels more at ease with a furry companion nearby
Piper's Story
Piper is more than a therapy dog. She's a rescue with her own story of healing. When Piper found her forever home, trusting people was hard and scary for her. Over time, with patience and love, she transformed into the calm, confident companion she is today. Her journey mirrors what so many of our clients experience: the process of learning to feel secure again, building trust, and discovering that connection is possible even after difficult beginnings. Piper brings that lived wisdom into every session. She doesn't judge. She doesn't rush. She just shows up, fully present, and meets you exactly where you are. When she's not in sessions, Piper loves playing in the snow, mountain adventures, snuggling, going on walks, and napping.
How Animal-Assisted Therapy Works at Wildflower
Animal-assisted therapy at Wildflower isn't a separate service you book. It's integrated into your regular therapy sessions with Jordyn Russo, LCSW. Piper is available during in-person sessions at our Littleton, CO office. Her involvement is always optional, if you prefer sessions without her, that's completely respected.
✦ Grounding exercises during anxiety or trauma processing
✦ Building awareness of your body's stress signals by noticing how Piper responds to your energy
✦ Practicing attunement and presence by connecting with Piper in the moment
✦ Using Piper as a bridge to explore themes of trust and connection
Animal-Assisted Therapy Combined with EMDR, Somatic & Integrative Approaches
What makes animal-assisted therapy at Wildflower unique is that it's layered into an already comprehensive, body-based treatment approach. Piper's calming presence enhances the somatic and EMDR work that Jordyn specializes in.
✦ During EMDR sessions, Piper's presence can help regulate your nervous system, making it easier to stay grounded during reprocessing
✦ During somatic work, petting or being near Piper naturally engages your body's relaxation response, supporting the release of stored tension
✦ During parts work and self-trust exercises, Piper models unconditional acceptance, which can be a powerful experience for women who struggle to extend that same compassion to themselves
